VICARIOUSLY
EXPERIENCE THE DAYS OF THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD
Treat
yourself to a visit to the old Graue Mill and Museum in Oak
Brook, Illinois.This Underground Railroad "station,"
nestled beside the Salt Creek, was operated by miller Frederick
Graue. Come, actually stand in the basement where Graue secretly
provided shelter for freedom seeking Underground Railroad
"passengers." Imagine how it must have felt to be
a "passenger" resting in the basement from your
perilous journey, then to hear voices and footsteps overhead
as Frederick Graue grinds cornmeal for unsuspecting customers

"Traditionally
most accounts of the Underground Railroad have been limited to people
and events on the East Coast. Every school child learned of and
was intrigued by the daring rescue missions conducted by the legendary
Harriet Tubman. Underground Railroad operations in Illinois and
elsewhere in 'the West', as the Middle West was then called, were
little known. These and related anti-slavery activities were far
more significant than incidental references indicated.
My
research, motivated by a neighbor's chance remark in the late 1960's,
has delved into details of the Underground Railroad in Illinois
and surrounding states; it has revealed the pivotal role people
and events in Illinois had upon the entire nation prior to and during
the Civil War.
I
have been fascinated by this previously missing page in American
history and have spent the past thirty years ferreting out information
on this subject. I taught elementary school during twenty of these
years. Observing that there was a dearth of information available
at that level and beyond, I have compiled my findings in the book,
The Underground Railroad in Illinois.
Just
as a PBS special appeals to and informs viewers of different ages
and degrees of prior knowledge, The Underground Railroad in Illinois
speaks to and informs readers of every age and background. The secret
of this book's wide appeal is its multi-level organization. It is
fully illustrated. Maps, old photographs, and drawings add dimension
to the text.
The
many textboxes are rich catalysts for further research. They include
slave narratives, biographical sketches of black and white abolitionists
(including little known details of the life and work of public figures
and the role of less well known people) and information on Underground
Railroad sites."
